A Traditional Microsoft "Welcome Back"

Microsoft has evolved some, um, unique traditions over the years. One of these is the “Welcome Back Carter” tradition. When a Microsoftie returns from an extended absence (honeymoon, maternity/paternity leave, trek across Siberia, etc) they find an office that is altered beyond recognition.

The sign on the door reads, “Do NOT enter, unless you are Carter. Carter, push hard to compress styrofoam.“ The window is filled with packing peanuts (as was an overhead box that dumped peanuts on Carter's head when he entered) and the walls, floor, ceiling, furiture, and windows are festooned with orange Microsoft cups.

Some office alterations are legendary, such as one where a team disappeared a teammate's door by walling it in (sheetrocked, spackled, and painted). Most, like the one pictured above, are fairly tame. I've seen wall-paper jobs, hundreds of hanging baby figurines, real furniture replaced by beach furniture and the floor covered with sand, and many other ingenious alterations, some of which the occupants actually retain.

That is a thing of beauty. Must have gotten the design team in on it. Very cool.

Here are some more interesting FAQ about this.

No members of the design team were involved, but perhaps they should have been. ?

There are roughly over 2,500 cups. Or rather 6 kitchens and a cafeteria worth.

No painting of the office itself was involved since, according to the memo, it would have been too costly to remove.

“Cups are Free Sara…FREE”

Any other pictures of Microsoft "Welcome Back" pranks? I'm intrigued and (now) looking for ideas...

Here's an idea for you. Aluminum foil. Everything. Books, chair, pencils, sticky pads. Wrap it all. Just make sure you recycle.

Ah yes, the ice cave effect. This would be a perfect counterpoint to scooblog's beach scene http://blogs.msdn.com/jledgard/archive/0001/01/01/59562.aspx.

In the ancient (i.e. before my time) department a similar prank was pulled on Steve Ballmer, in the relight was filled with little bouncy rubber balls instead of packing peanuts.

In the not-so-ancient (i.e. during my time) department there's the time when some Word devs gathered together nearly every 1st edition Ship-It award (the 10 lb lucite blocks) in buildings 16, 17 and 18 and decorated Ed Fries' office with them. It took Pam Waggoner more than a month to return each one to its rightful owner.

Unfortunately, I have no picture of either, but the MicroNews might have some in their archives.

Another suggestion. Get a Killer Tomato like the Navy uses for target practice and inflate in in the office. Some shipmates and I did that to one of our officers once.

Oops!! But tell me how many months do they take it to clean up the mess what you guys have created ?

I wish people at my company were this inventive!

I was recently off on sick leave for over 3 months, and when I got back absolutely *nothing* had changed (except for a team member leaving).

It was spooky - like they'd not even noticed I wasn't there all that time...
